El Hierro has 10,968 inhabitants, according to official population figures published by ISTAC, the Canary Islands Statistical Institute.
This is a rural society, with long experience of seeking opportunities to overcome the obstacles of distance and double insularity, together with a history of problematic connections with the outside world.
The population consists mainly of older adults, aged above the national average. The islanders are driven chiefly by a determination to work towards a future full of opportunity for their young people, and this effort is to a great extent focused on renewable energy and on initiatives linked to sustainability.
Gorona del Viento El Hierro is the concrete expression of El Hierro’s tenacity in overcoming challenges such as its dependence on the outside world, the scarcity of water, the lack of employment, and the absence of specialist training — all of which have been addressed by the start-up of the El Hierro Wind-Pumped Hydro Power Station.
