The head office of Gorona del Viento El Hierro, S.A. is in Valverde, the capital of island of El Hierro — which is also the location of the Wind-Pumped Hydro Power Station.
El Hierro is the most southerly and westerly of the Canary Islands. It covers 268.71 km2 and has a population of 10,968 (data from the National Statistical Institute, 2019).
The highest point of the island is its centre, the Pico del Malpaso, which rises to an altitude of 1,501 metres.
El Hierro’s outstanding geographical characteristic is its steeply sloping landscape, meaning that it has a plethora of micro-climates. The result is that a variety of different landscapes, temperatures, etc., can be found within a distance of a few kilometres.
Like the rest of the Canary Archipelago, El Hierro is an island of volcanic origin, still in the process of being formed (as shown by the relatively recent undersea eruption which occurred to the south of the Island in 2011).
